i have signed up for hackthebox and new here…i was trying to use retired machine to practice but i am not able to. is it free or i have to pay if i want to use anything here ?

Two retired machines are free, the rest are only on VIP.
However you might be better starting with the Starting Point boxes: Login :: Hack The Box :: Penetration Testing Labs
