How to properly connect to VPN?

Hi! I could really use your help, im desperate!

I downloaded VB, installed Kali and started using HTB.
Im not a VIP user and now on Tier 1. For some reason I cannnot ping nor connect to a machine anymore.

when I try
nmap -sC -sV -sS [target IP]
it says all scanned ports are in ignored states. Not shown’ 1000 filtered tcp ports (no-response).

Then I looked into it and realised i hadnt installed network-manager-openvpn-gnome and started getting into this whole thing like “am I properly connected to VPN server?” “is it safe for me to keep using HTB like how ive been using?”

can you PLEASE help me and walk me through the proper way to connect to VPN.?

I have starting_point_[my un].ovpn file in Kali Desktop and thats the one I think I am connected to atm…

Thanks so much!

Download the appropriate VPN file and then go to the console. To connect to the VPN, type:
sudo openvpn /home/yourpath/to/vpn.ovpn

After that you can check in another terminal with the command ifconfig tun0, if you got an IP address 10.x.x.x.
