Hello mates ! FIrst time that I write here, I’ll try to be the more specific without giving spoilers in my message.
I’m currently working on the Pwnbox because I’m not at my place for the next weeks then I have not my personal device. That’s why I need to solve this problem on the Pwnbox.

So far I have suceed to get the user flag, I also get the master password for my privesc but when I want to convert the ppk file with puttygen I get the error ā€œPuTTY key format is too newā€.
I have tried to update putty and puttygen but I get for both ā€œunable to find the packageā€.

Did some of you have or are facing the same problem ? If yes, what can I do on the Pwnbox to remediate this problem ? Or maybe I’m missing something ?

It’s so frustrating to be in front of the root door with the key to access it and being unable to use it hahaha

Thanks by advance for future answers !!

I finally find a solution for this one and retrieve the root flag, if anyone need help on this particular issue feel free to DM me !

I think this was the only machine that matched the classification. rooted!

I went about this box in a completely different way than intended I think. I got root before user, lol.

A hint for those struggling with the format: The easiest way is to use the windows version (*****gen.exe) with wine64

Hi, I’m having trouble with the linux version, but I have no clue how to use the windows version. Can I pm you with more details about my issue?

Hi all!

I’m a newbie and I’m having problems with DNS, it’s not allowing me to access the ā€œsupportā€ url and try the login, can anyone advise?

Thnx in advance

Same issue on arch, this resolved it, thanks!

I’m stuck at the last step to convert a file into something useful to gain root. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE

I figured it out and finally rooted my first machine here!

Hi @Tic0rv, i faced the same problem with you i believe its because the puttygen from apt is v0.74 while there is a new key format introduced in v0.75
how do you solve that?

Hi @zachia , yes you’re right it is the problem
Therefore you have two choice : update putty on pwnbox, but it can be tricky and the easy path is to use another VM (as kali for example) and just copy paste the file on it and use puttygen whose is up to date on it! No need to connect the kali VM to HTB just copy paste then use puttygen on kali and copy paste the result on your pwnbox

Hope it’ll help!

Don’t hesistate to DM me back if it didn’t work

I feel remarkably stupid with this machine. iykyk.

I have a problem that is not strictly related to this Box.

I can’t access the link on the page. I can view the initial web page just fine, but following that link gives me a ā€œServer errorā€.

I am trying to solve this inside my own Parrot VM. I was able to solve Boxes with my configuration (but none of the previous ones had any redirects).
I tried using a Bridged Adaptor, as well as NAT. Both have the same result.

Can you help me with this?

A year later, and I’ve been stuck for 30 minutes because of the same typo. Looool
