The senior pen tester who interviewed me recommended the hacker playbook series. I’m not very far into them yet but so far it’s been really good!

for History: Hackers: Heroes of the Computer Revolution by Steven Levy

A bit older, but still very good: The Web Application Hacker’s Handbook.

Advanced Penetration Testing by Will Allsopp - focus on building your own C2 infrastructure for hacking very secure networks.

I definitely recommend: Hacking - The Art of Exploitation by Jon Erickson. One of the best books I’ve read so far.

2nd that… I’ve also found this one to be a good quick reference and ideas giving book: ETHICAL HACKING AND PENETRATION TESTING GUIDE
